Welp, I just watched Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3
Aaaand to absolutely nobody’s surprise, this was a slam dunk on Marvel and James Gunn’s part. Honestly, I don’t know how people can be so skeptical of James Gunn’s DCU slate after this because clear he knows how to jump high and stick the landing
Before I talk about how awesome this movie was though, I should add that this is a lot darker of a movie than the previous Guardians of the Galaxy, and honestly might be the darkest in the MCU from a standpoint of what’s going on
Hopefully this won’t count as spoilers, but in this movie there’s visible blood and legitimate animal cruelty, the latter of which especially might be a bit much for some people. I personally was unaffected by it, if anything the dark aspects adding tension, stakes, & feel to the movie, but this is worth mentioning
Now that that’s mentioned, let’s talk about the characters
Our Guardians of the Galaxy all have satisfying conclusions that really feel right for them, and how they’re characterized is great too
Star-Lord is great as ever, and his progression & conclusion is great, and I like how his emotional reaction to Gamora being from a different past timeline comes off in this movie and how they interact (even if Gamora was a little overly aggressive)
Mantis was something I was not prepared for, unlike in Guardians 2 she was super kick ass in this movie like her comic book counterpart. She’s still an obvious softy, but an obvious softy who can break your hand with a toothpick
Drax is Drax and Nebula shows her progression well, and the amount of depth/character exploration added to Rocket is something else. We can see why Rocket has a hardshell for his feelings and we root for him the whole way
Adam might be a hit or miss with some people. I don’t really know him well from the comics, but here he comes off as less of an intellectual and more like he’d be amazed by a butterfly
But I liked him, he was still strong and powerful and he wasn’t just a one dimensional object with movement like MCU Taskmaster
I’m not going to spoil who the villain is, but he’s top 10 in the MCU for me. He’s both genius and an absolute lunatic and watching him defeated was beyond satisfying. Star-Lord is even shown hating on him a couple times, so you know he’s the type of villain you’re supposed to hate
There’s obviously more but anything else would risk spoiler territory. Next to talk about is the general tone and writing. Everything after Adam Warlock shows has the stakes amped up to 10 and I was genuinely worried for rather it not they’d complete the mission
There are obviously a lot of jokes but nothing that really ruins the moment or makes the movie anything less
The main villain is written as smart, but egoistic and unstable, he’s so high and mighty of himself but when something goes wrong or something says otherwise to him like they’re an equal, he goes ballistic (Seriously, m8 might need some therapy for his god complex)
I don’t think I need to talk about the visuals and soundtrack, which are both fire as usual for this rag tag gang of underdogs. The action’s pretty good too, my favorite of course being the main v’s defeat (you’ll know why when you see it)
It’s also worth noting how emotional the movie is. It’s sad, it’s funny, it’s anger inducing, it’s charming, it’s wholesome, and it makes you go “LETS GET IT!!!” at times, and I don’t mean like normal “LETS GET IT!!!”, I mean Prince Charming “LETS GET IT!!!” (2:31:57)
(But I digress)
So overall, this movie’s pretty much got it all, and it’s probably my favorite movie of the Multiverse Saga, beating out Wakanda Forever and landing up there with Shang-Chi and No Way Home
Suffice to say, this movie’s an incredible conclusion to these characters and this trilogy, and you are all going to enjoy it
Rating: 9–10/10
